Introduction of ETFE membrane and PTFE membrane

  ETFE chemical name ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer, is a fluorine-containing polymer thermoplastic material, is an artificial high-strength fluoropolymer, ETFE film is directly formed from the material. ETFE membrane material has good durability, cleanability and stability. It is a typical non-woven membrane material and is currently the most advanced film material in the world. The National Stadium uses a 0.25mm thick, colorless transparent ETFE film with printed dots. The chemical name of PTFE is polytetrafluoroethylene, which is a chemically inert material. It uses glass fiber as the base material to form a PTFE membrane. PTFE also has excellent durability, ease of cleaning and stability. The PTFE membrane material selected by the National Stadium is the sound-absorbing membrane material in the ceiling area and the waterproof membrane material in the inner ring façade according to different locations. After testing, the fire performance of ETFE membrane and PTFE membrane can reach B1 level, which is a flame retardant material.

1. Characteristics of PTFE membrane

(1) The biggest feature of PTFE membrane is its high strength. The thickness of medium-strength PTFE membrane is only 0.8mm, but its tensile strength has reached the level of steel; and its elastic modulus is low, which is conducive to the formation of complex curved surfaces. modeling;

(2) Wide operating temperature range, can be used in the temperature range of -70℃~230;

(3) With unique optical properties, the incident light during the day becomes natural warm light, preventing glare, without shadows, and the light is evenly distributed; almost no ultraviolet rays penetrate, preventing the fading of interior decoration materials and equipment; high reflection performance at night makes the room It has excellent lighting effect, reduces power consumption, and can bring out the splendor of buildings in the night sky;

(4) Good self-cleaning, rainwater can wash off the attachments on the surface;

(5) It has high light transmittance, the light transmittance is 13%, the heat reflectivity is 73%, and the heat absorption is very small;

(6) The service life is more than 25 years.

2. Characteristics of ETFE membrane

        "ETFE" is the abbreviation of Ethylene Tetra Fluoro Ethylene in English, and its Chinese name is ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer. ETFE membrane has high tensile strength, impact strength and tear resistance. The thickness of the ETFE film is usually 0.05 to 0.25mm. As the thickness increases, the hardness of the film material will increase, and at the same time, it will become more brittle, which increases the difficulty of processing. A typical use of ETFE material is to "weld" two or three layers of film together and transport it to the job site. They are then inflated to inflate them into air pillows.

(1) Made of fluoroplastics, it can also apply pre-tension like fabric membranes;

(2) Resistant to temperature changes, can be directly exposed to temperatures from -200°C to 150°C;

(3) The transmittance of ETFE film can be as high as 95%. The material does not block the transmission of light such as ultraviolet rays to ensure natural light inside the building. By surface printing, the translucency of the material can be further reduced to 50%;

(4) The special anti-adhesion surface makes it highly anti-fouling and easy to clean. Usually, rainwater can remove the main dirt;

(5) ETFE film reaches B1, DIN4102 fire rating standards, and will not drip when burning. The thickness is usually 0.05mm to 0.25mm, and the film is very light, only 0.15kg to 0.35kg per square meter. This feature makes it have considerable advantages even in the case of film melting caused by smoke and fire;

(6) ETFE membranes are completely recyclable materials, which can be reused to produce new membrane materials, or to produce other ETFE products after separating impurities;

(7) Corrosion resistance and strong adhesion to metal, which overcomes the defect of non-adhesion of PTFE to metal, and its average linear expansion coefficient is close to that of carbon steel, making ETFE (F-40) becomes an ideal composite material with metal, and has excellent negative pressure resistance characteristics;

(8) ETFE membrane has a service life of at least 25 to 35 years, and is an ideal material for permanent multi-layer movable roof structures;

(9) It is usually used in buildings in the form of air cushions, and the economic span of air cushions is generally 3-5 m. Multiple air cushions can be connected together to form a large covered space through steel structure, aluminum alloy structure or cable net. In terms of each air cushion, it is an inflatable structure; in terms of the whole structure, each air cushion unit is equivalent to an envelope structure. Constant monitoring and replenishment of air pressure is required.

        In comparison, ETFE film has higher light transmittance and better chemical resistance than PTFE film, and can resist most acids and alkalis; ETFE film has strong natural aging resistance and good processability and mechanical properties. Because ETFE film is directly formed from plastic without a substrate, its tensile strength and tear strength are not as good as PTFE film, and it has high one-time investment, high maintenance cost during use, and poor resistance to sharp objects.
