3. Membrane application

        At present, there are few manufacturers capable of producing and processing ETFE membrane materials in the world. Only a few companies in Germany, the United States, Japan and other countries can produce ETFE membrane materials, and even fewer companies have the ability to process, manufacture and install ETFE membrane materials. ETFE membranes have been used in foreign countries for more than 20 years. Due to its excellent light transmission performance, it is especially suitable for the construction of buildings that need to artificially simulate the natural environment, such as botanical gardens and sports venues. For example, the Arnhiem Zoo in the Netherlands, the Hampshire Tennis and Fitness Club in the United Kingdom, the Garden of Eden in the United Kingdom, the "Moby Dick" swimming pool in Germany, and the Masoala Rainforest in Zurich, Switzerland, all use ETFE membranes.

        The fabric-coated PTFE architectural membrane was jointly developed by several companies and design units based on DuPont and Corning Fiberglass in the early 1970s. In 1973, this architectural membrane material was first applied to the roof of the student activity center of the Laverne College of the University of California, USA. The building has been in use for over 20 years. After tracking and testing, its PTFE architectural membrane material is basically the same as before.

        At present, the application range of PTFE membrane materials has been relatively wide, including various sports buildings, exhibition buildings, airport buildings and facilities, seaside entertainment and leisure buildings and facilities, etc. Top international venues include the Tokyo Dome in Japan, the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, the Millennium Dome in the United Kingdom, and the Seoul Stadium in South Korea. There are also a lot of them in China: such as the Shanghai 80,000 Gymnasium, the Shanghai F1 Circuit, etc. There are many foreign manufacturers producing this kind of architectural membrane, such as German Mehler Company, Japan TaiyoKogyo Company, Zhongxing Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., and American Chemfab Company. They all have relatively mature preparation technology. At present, domestic companies have also invested in development and production, but at present, most domestic membrane structure companies purchase such architectural membrane materials from abroad at high prices for the construction of membrane structures.

        In my country, before 1997, only a small number of small and medium-sized membrane structures were built. In the 7th National Games held in Shanghai in the same year, the PTFE membrane structure was used in the canopy of the main stadium, with a total area of 36100m2. This is the first time in China that the roof made of membrane material is used on a large area of permanent buildings, which has far-reaching influence. Since then, PTFE membrane materials have been used in my country one after another, such as Shanghai New International Exhibition Center, Guangzhou Huadu New International Airport Terminal, and a large number of new small and medium-sized buildings in various places. The Bird's Nest project adopts a 53000m2 PTFE membrane structure. Due to the limitation of technical level, the application of ETFE membrane materials in my country is relatively lagging behind. The National Aquatics Center "Water Cube" and the National Stadium "Bird's Nest" use ETFE membrane structure building materials or the first large-scale application of ETFE membrane materials in my country.

In general, membrane structures and materials have strong vitality and market, and it will become a new economic growth point in the 21st century, such as new construction engineering materials, textile and clothing fabrics and environmental protection materials. At present, the production and application of membrane materials in my country is still in its infancy. Due to the limitation of chemical technology and the level of mechanical and electronic manufacturing, we still produce very few varieties and the output is not large. The membrane materials produced in many foreign countries have many varieties and high technical content. Most of the existing membrane materials for membrane structure buildings in China rely on imports. The architectural membrane materials and technologies used in "Water Cube" are all imported products and construction designs.

        To sum up, the gap between my country and foreign developed countries in the application of new membrane materials is reflected in:

1) Lack of production technology for membrane materials with excellent performance

        The membrane structure can only be widely used after the material problem is solved, so the key issue is to provide a membrane material that meets the functional requirements, has good durability and is economical. At present, only a few manufacturers in my country can produce PTFE and ETFE membrane materials for construction, and their performance is still far behind that of foreign products. With the application of PTFE and ETFE membrane materials in the Bird's Nest and "Water Cube" projects, the market demand for membrane materials in my country will continue to expand, which will encourage my country's membrane material manufacturers to increase investment, innovate technology, and promote membrane material production technology. rapid development.

2) Lack of membrane material processing and construction technology

        Membrane processing and construction technology is another bottleneck restricting the application of membrane materials in my country. At present, in the large-scale application of membrane materials, foreign technologies are basically used, and my country still lacks the experience of independently completing the design and construction of membrane materials.

        However, the application of ETFE membrane materials in the "Water Cube" and "Bird's Nest" projects has promoted the "National Swimming Center Membrane Structure Technology and Construction Quality Acceptance Standards", "National Stadium ETFE Membrane Structure Construction Quality Acceptance Standards" and "National Stadium". The promulgation of the project standards for ETFE membrane technology and construction in the "Acceptance Standards for Construction Quality of PTFE Membrane Structures" has laid a good foundation for my country to improve membrane processing and construction technology in the future.
